It’s a hive of activity here at the Norfolk Diet Team as we put the finishing touches to our first Norwich Farmers Market this Saturday. As we are more of a virtual team its actually lots of emails, Skype calls and Twitter DM’s flying around as we tick off lists, recruit placard carriers with ‘bribes’ of Brays Cottage Pies, double check the stall layout, tweet, get excited about press coverage and the like.

The final line up is looking like this:

Brays Cottage: with their marvellous pork pies and (new this year) crackle

Smokeshack BBQ: with real American style BBQ goodies and (fingers crossed) their food smoker on site

Northcote Brewery: delicious locally handcrafted beers, in bottles for the first time at the market

Scone’ology: newly launched (and in Wednesday’s EDP2 p4-5) with handmade sweet and savoury scones

Macarons + More: 2010 Masterchef finalist Tim Kinnaird with his amazing macarons and cakes. There’ll be a limited edition Norwich City Football Club macaron (lemon & lime obviously) available to celebrate the clubs promotion back to the Premiership

Window Coffee: UK Barista finalist Hayley will be bringing lots of her lovely coffee roasts and doing mini tasting sessions

Pye Baker: artisan bakers will be there with a range of their delicious breads and other goodies

The Garden Farmer: with plenty of plants for you to stock your garden or allotment and grow some delicious veg, fruit or stunning flowers

Breckland Orchard: with their full range of Posh Pops including the recently launched and very grown up Sloe Lemonade

English Coleslaw Company: their coleslaws are just what you need to go with your BBQ goodies that you picked up from Smokeshack

Woodberry Farm: chutneys, jams and fresh fruit, their lovely strawberries are now in season, perfect for a spring day

Drove Orchards: pressed apple juices from this lovely farm, really refreshing

Jans Roti: authentic Caribbean foods to delight you palate

Fielding Cottage: made on the farm goats cheeses, get there early as they may have to go by 2pm to milk their goats. There will be eggs too.

Wholesome Grocer: lovely picnic goodies from local produce

Crush Foods: Norfolk grown and produced extra virgin cold pressed rape seed oil, salad dressings, pesto and hummus

Ethnic Fusion: for fine Indian cuisine

Many of you will already have heard, and perhaps some of you noticed if you were in Norwich yesterday, that the farmers market in Gentleman’s Walk is no more.

We weren’t able to come to a satisfactory agreement with Norwich City Council about the direction the market should take in terms of stalls and other details.

Particular sticking points were the serving of hot food and also cookery demonstrations. People have told us they’d like to see these and we have potential stall holders interested in doing just those kinds of things. But the council said NO.

We think its pretty short sighted of them and so do lots of you from your comments on our facebook page. And we are really grateful for all the support you have been giving us.

We are now actively talking to a number of different and interesting venues and we hope to have a bigger and better market back with you soon.

Existing stallholders are planning on coming to the new venue and we’ve an exciting group of new stallholders we’ve been talking to including:

Tim Kinnaird Cakes (of 2010 Masterchef fame), The Window Cafe, The Garden Farmer, Wood Berry Farm and The SmokeShack and a few others….

So watch out for news of the new venue and dates and also the inetersting stalls we are going to be able to offer.

Norwich will have a farmers market it can be proud of.
